Linear loads with low power factor (such as induction motors) may be fixed with a passive network of inductors or capacitors. Non-linear loads (such as rectifiers) distort the current drawn from the system. In such cases, active or passive power factor correction can be used to counteract the distortion and raise the power factor. The tools for adjustment of the power factor might be at a central substation, spread out over a distribution system, or built into power-consuming equipment.
Mainly, static compensation is not done at line voltage. A bank of transformers steps the transmission voltage down to a lower level (for example, 9.5 kV). This reduces number and the size of components needed in the SVC. Regardless of the conductors have to be very large to take care of the high currents .
Big capacitor banks are used as energy sources for the exploding-bridgewire detonators or slapper detonators in nuclear weapons or specialty weapons. Unconventional work is started using banks of capacitors as power sources for coilguns and electromagnetic railguns and electromagnetic armour.
Groups of specially constructed and large, low-inductance are called capacitor banks or capacitor. Capacitor generally are used to supply pulses of current for many pulsed power applications. These contain pulse forming networks, radar, Marx generators, electromagnetic forming, pulsed lasers (especially TEA lasers), fusion research, and particle accelerators.
